– Sleeping Children Around the World –
Sleeping Children Around the World – SCAW is a charitable organization, founded in 1970 by Murray Dryden. The objective is to provide bedkits to children in developing countries. For each $35 bedkit donation, SCAW provides a child with a kit consisting of a mattress, pillow, blanket, school supplies, and mosquito netting. The bedkits are produced in the country where they are distributed. I have wanted to join SCAW on one of their distributions for many years, and this was the year that I finally made it happen. My Dad, Bill Baker has been a SCAW volunteer since I was a kid, and has travelled all over the world doing this work. It was an honour to travel with him to Kenya for this year’s distribution.
We arrived in Nairobi at 7am on Sunday, February 22nd. We met our team of 7 and then we were off to explore the city. We were taken on a tour to meet the local vendors who contribute items to the bedkits along with some sight seeing. The next day our distribution schedule started and it was the beginning of what would be an eye-opening, life-changing two weeks.
This post features images taken from the first week of distributions. We delivered 2000 bedkits over 4 days at 4 schools. The children receive their play clothes that are included in each kit ahead of time, and change into them to line up for an official photo which features the kit and everything it contains. Then one of our team members gives each child a bedkit. In between handing out the kits, we played with the kids. Blowing bubbles were a big hit, along with dancing, singing, and seeing themselves in the back of my camera after making faces, or giving me big smiles.
The children are incredible in every way. They were so happy we were there, and so welcoming and appreciative. I am still smiling from having met every single one of them.
